Leif tried to act as if he wasn’t upset, but Chris knew him better than that. He also knew not to ask Leif about his obviously psycho ex. Leif would tell him in his own time.

Chris convinced Leif to take them home not long after, and the ride was virtually silent. Chris could see how stiffly Leif held himself and he knew he couldn’t leave Leif tonight. Stephanie wasn’t expecting him home anyway; she never complained when he didn’t go home, and never questioned his vague explanations. He couldn’t bring himself to be concerned about it.

He got Leif to bed, slowly stripping off his costume, worshipping his body as well as he knew how. Leif seemed happy to let Chris lead for once, barely speaking. Chris made love to Leif gently and slowly, and Leif only gasped and moaned, climaxing quietly and wordlessly.

Leif drifted off to sleep almost immediately, and Chris tried his best not to disturb him.

It was close to dawn when Chris was awakened by Leif thrashing and yelling.

“What’s wrong?” Chris sat straight up, looking wildly around the room. The room was just light enough that he could see that Leif was still lying down. He must be dreaming.

“Leif. Wake up.” Chris put a hand cautiously on Leif’s shoulder. “You’re dreaming—”

Leif recoiled at the touch, screaming, “No! Don’t touch me!” He flailed even more energetically.

“Leif! “ Chris raised his voice. “It’s a dream, I’m here!” He reached out and grabbed one of Leif’s hands, trying to keep it still. It wasn’t easy, and Leif flailed with his free hand, hitting Chris in the face and chest before his eyes opened.

Leif gave a low sob, still trying to pull away from Chris. When Chris was sure Leif was actually awake, he let go. Leif curled into himself, breathing fast. He still didn’t speak, until Chris said, “Are you okay?”

“Do I look okay?” Leif spat, pulling his knees up and wrapping his arms around them. He looked so small that way, and Chris’s heart ached.

“No,” Chris admitted. “What can I do to help?”

Leif just looked at him like he’d said something monumentally stupid and rested his head on his knees.

Chris sighed and scooted closer, slowly. “Leif. Please. Talk to me.”

“Why?” Leif’s voice was muffled.

“Because it might help?”

Leif chuckled bitterly. “Yeah right.”

Chris took a chance and moved closer, putting a hand gently on Leif’s back. Leif flinched, but didn’t move away. “Whether you want to talk or not, I’m here.” He moved his hand in small circles, caressing. Leif wore no shirt and his skin was cool to the touch.

Leif sobbed quietly for a few moments, then raised his head. The sun was rising, and Chris could see how bad Leif looked. He hadn’t gotten all the eyeliner off last night, and the remnants streaked down his face. His skin was pale, and he had deep shadows under his eyes. “You can go. I’m not going to kill myself or anything.”

Chris frowned. “I’m not going anywhere!”

“Why not?”

“How could you even ask that?” Chris demanded.
